Core Values

Ambition:

Ambition has taken me a long way in my college years. It has allowed me to pursue the countless opportunities that have interested me, both at UW and at the other two schools I was at prior to UW. For instance, I always knew that I wanted to study abroad, so I worked extra hard during my first year at UW to make it happen. As a result, I was accepted into a program and went to Denmark for a semester.

Humility:

To me, a great leader is someone who is approachable and humble, rather than full of themselves. No matter high up on the ladder you are, I believe it is always important to be down to earth. In order to show humility, I believe in being direct and transparent, but also showing a sense of humor and not always taking oneself too seriously.

Creativity:

Being a great leader also means learning to think outside of the box. It means challenging the current solutions to problems and trying to come up with new, innovative ways to solve them. One example of the creativity I have demonstrated in college was when I designed and ran my own research project at Bellevue College, which I later presented at the UW undergraduate research symposium. I had to come up with my own ways to solve the problems that came up in research when the answers weren’t handed to me. Being creative also means being genuine and not being afraid to go against the flow.

Resilience:

Resilience is important to me because I have learned that it can get you out of just about any rut, which all leaders are bound to face at some point. One example of how resilience was important to me was during my first quarter at UW. I had an incredibly difficult time in my classes and had a lot going on outside of school as well. I earned a 2.1 GPA that quarter and felt incredibly discouraged. Nonetheless, I was always optimistic that I was capable of doing better. The next quarter I earned a 3.9 GPA and every quarter after that I have gotten at least a 3.5 GPA.

Service:

I have always believed in the importance of giving back to my community. I worked as a swim instructor at my local pool for several years and I felt a great amount of joy with giving back to my community. To this day I still feel great knowing that the swimming skills I taught to those children had a positive impact on their lives. I also believe it is important to remember that there are many people out there that are not as fortunate and to give back to those people in the best ways that we can.
